Obituary of Thomas C. Kopakowski
Please share a memory of Thomas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Thomas Kopakowski took his final journey on October 15, 2024. True to his adventurous spirit, Tom always saw life as a trip worth taking, filled with love, laughter, and a touch of mischief.
Traveling was one of his favorite pastimes – he was never happier than when he hopped in his car to visit family and friends. After losing the love of his life, Jean Kosek, in 2017, following 34 years of marriage, Tom found solace in the company of those closest to him. Whether swimming countless laps, cycling for miles, or just sharing a laugh, staying active and connected was paramount to Tom.
A self-taught painter, musician, singer, and songwriter – Tom never shied away from trying something new. Later in life, his art and music improved, though those who knew him would agree the bar wasn't set too high. Outside of the arts, Tom's hobbies included exercise, gardening, cooking, and collecting chickens and stray cats.
Born on March 28, 1948, Tom was the second of eight children. While he was a pacifist at heart, he served in the Army during the 1970s. It was during his time stationed in Germany that his wanderlust was awakened. Traveling across Europe, Tom marveled at life's surprises – most notably that the U.S. Army trusted him to work with nuclear weapons.
After his military service, Tom met Jean and that's when the real adventure began. Anyone who crossed paths with Tom and Jean knew they were an unforgettable duo. They embraced life with unbridled enthusiasm – traveling, flipping houses, homesteading, following bands on tour, and hosting legendary gatherings, one of which, to the surprise of their guests, included exchanging their wedding vows.
Tom is survived by his siblings Claire, Billy, Jeanne, Dottie, Mary, and Peggy, along with his many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He is reunited with his wife Jean Kosek, his brother Richard Kopakowski, and his parents, Thomas and Dorothy Kopakowski.
Tom was truly a one-of-a-kind. He marched to the beat of his own drum. He was all of the clichés rolled into one, yet Tom was as unique, kind, and lovely a person as you could ever know. There will be no replacing Tom. Those who loved him will forever consider themselves lucky to have had him in their lives.
A celebration of Tom's life will be held at Kove Restaurant in Audubon. Luncheon gathering to share our many fond and wonderful memories. Any who can join are so welcome. Saturday 11/9/2024 2:00 pm
